England had to settle for second spot in Group B after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Slovakia in Saint-Etienne.

Roy Hodgson’s men dominated for much of the game but were unable to turn their superiority into the hard currency of a lead, with Jamie Vardy, Adam Lallana, Dele Alli and Wayne Rooney all going close for England.

The draw left England on five points, one shy of Wales who leapfrogged them after beating a poor Russia side 3-0.

The result sees Slovakia up to four points, which should be good enough for one of the four best third place finishes on offer.

England will now face the second placed team from a finely poised Group F, meaning they could face any of Hungary, Iceland, Portugal or Austria.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Martin Skrtel (Slovakia) – The centre-back was rock solid for Slovakia, making countless blocks and clearances as England knocked on the door time and again. He was out-paced by Vardy in the first half, but there’s no shame in that and he will be the toast of his nation if Slovakia’s point does see them sneak through to the next stage.
