Ozan Tufan‘s finish on 65 minutes added to Burak Yilmaz‘s opening goal on 10 minutes as Turkey secured third place in Group D behind section winnersCroatia, who condemned Spain to second place and a match against Italy with a 2-1 win.

Only a 4-0 win for Turkey would have denied Michael O’Neill‘s Northern Ireland – playing in their first major finals since the 1982 World Cup in Spain – a historic spot in the last 16, whose 2-0 win over Ukraine on Friday was enough to leave them among the four best third-placed teams despite a 1-0 loss to world champions Germany earlier on Tuesday.

Turkey must hope Ireland lose to Italy and Sweden to Belgium in their respective closing matches in Group E on Wednesday night to retain hopes of progressing, but the Czechs are out having picked up only one point in a 2-2 draw with Croatia out of their three games.

Northern Ireland could face hosts and Group A winners France in Lyon on Sunday or Group B winners Wales in Paris on Saturday in a possible all-British last 16 tie.
