Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)

THE BUZZ: And they’re back! 20 years ago we thwarted an alien invasion with a Mac PowerBook and a computer virus, and this time around I’m betting the aliens have upgraded their firewall and invested in some antivirus software. Except for Will Smith, almost the entire team is back together for Resurgence: Vivica A. Fox, Bill Pullman, Brent Spiner, among others. I’m excited to see how the next generation (Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, and Joey King) teams up with our classic crew to take down the aliens once again. Phishing? Social engineering? – Vanessa

The Shallows (2016)

.THE BUZZ: Serena van der Woodson as a medical student/surfer vs. a great white shark? You saw how the shark jumped out of the deathly shallows Deep Blue Sea-style and eats that one guy, right? You’d sorta have to hate summer movies not to be into this. Only somewhat related: It’s a perfect time to start re-watching “Gossip Girl.” – Arno

Free State of Jones (2016)

THE BUZZ: Free State of Jones chronicles the true story of Newt Knight, a white Mississippi native who deserted from the Confederate army and, with the help of both poor white farmers and African-Americans, took over Jones County, declaring it an independent state. Knight’s then-radical beliefs included racial, gender, and economic equality. The film promises Matthew McConaughey in his rebel hero mode, stirring monologues, and a chance to learn about an obscure chapter of American history. – Sara

The Neon Demon (2016)

THE BUZZ: Glitter, models, mayhem! Danish writer/director Nicolas Winding Refn elevates the horror movie to new arty levels. According to IMDb trivia for the film, he shot it in chronological order, and the ending was created and improvised on set. This film marks Refn’s third film in competition for the Palme d’Or at Cannes. – Chako

Raman Raghav 2.0 (2016)

THE BUZZ: Gangs of Wasseypur filmmaker looks to have another global hit on his hands with this cop vs. serial killer thriller that steeps itself in some true crime scenarios that occurred in 1960s Bombay.
