Jerome Boateng, Mario Gomez and Julian Draxler were the heroes as Germany put in a superb performance to beat Slovakia 3-0 at Euro 2016.

Boateng fired his first-ever goal for Germany inside eight minutes to get the world champions off to a fine start.

Mesut Ozil’s missed penalty five minutes later sparked a wobble in the German camp, but Gomez struck just before half time after a lovely run and fine ball from Draxler.

Draxler – starting a match in place of the dropped Mario Gotze – then deservedly picked up a goal of his own just after the hour mark, a hooked volley into the net to put the match beyond doubt.

Germany will play either Italy or Spain in the quarter-final – and on this evidence, they will be hot favourites to go on and face France, England or Iceland in the semi-finals.
