The basketball schedule for the Rio Games has been released, and the United States now knows what its path to a third straight gold would look like.
Team USA is in Group A along with France, Venezuela, Serbia, China and Australia, FIBA announced Sunday .
China will be the first opponent for the USA, as the two teams will meet on Aug. 6. Venezuela (Aug. 8), Australia (Aug. 10), Serbia (Aug. 12) and France (Aug. 14) will complete the schedule, with teams having one day off between each game.
Following pool play, eight teams will participate in a single-elimination tournament.
So who poses the biggest threat to the USA in its pool? At full strength, it would likely be Australia, but that team is far from full strength. Australia will be without several of its best players in the competition. Ben Simmons, the top pick in the NBA Draft, decided not to participate, and Andrew Bogut will likely miss the Games after suffering a knee injury in the NBA Finals
With Australia undermanned, France will be the team most likely to give the watered-down USA squad a run in pool play. The French will be led by Spurs point guard Tony Parker and Boris Diaw, who was traded from the Spurs to the Jazz last week.
Team USA will be playing without superstars LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Russell Westbrook, but Kevin Durant, DeMarcus Cousins, Carmelo Anthony and company will still be heavy favorites to bring home the gold
